Seven Powerful Beliefs of an NLP Practitioner
By Dr Vijay Shah
What Happens on a quality NLP Practitioner Certification training? First, you learn the fundamentals of NLP - "The Presuppositions of NLP." One presupposition of NLP, "The map is not the territory," is saying that everyone's perception of "reality" is different. Thus, a person does not know whether his beliefs are actually true or false. However, he can become aware of their effects in his life. Are they moving him in the direction of the person he wants to be, or not? Are they filling his life with experiences of love, joy, and happiness, to name but a few emotions, or not? Are they helping him to make the world a better place to live in, or not, etc? Armed with this awareness, you can be open to other possibilities and ongoing learning. Second, you learn to can adopt the following core beliefs (usually taught in an NLP Certification Program), and you are well on your way to transforming your life.
NLP Practitioner Belief 1: There is a reason and purpose for all that happens. Although this is quite a philosophical statement, it is the trademark of every successful person - from Bill Gates to Warren Buffet. No matter what happens, they always look for the silver lining behind every failure. They see it as a learning experience from which they can grow and develop further. It enables them to espouse the virtues of possibility thinking as taught by Dr. Robert Schuller, and thereby turn impossibilities into possibilities.
NLP Practitioner Belief 2: There is no such thing as failure. This forms the basis of another NLP presupposition, "There is no such thing as failure, only feedback." This belief is actually an extension of the first one. What it is really saying is that one never fails to produce a result. The only question is, "Is it the result one intended or not?" If it is, that's great. It is time to rejoice, congratulate oneself, and to build bridges, which act as the gateway to the future of one's choice by design. If it is not, then accept it as feedback. It is time to vary the internal representations (IRs) in order to produce the state that one needs to generate the behaviors that will culminate in the desired results.
NLP Practitioner Belief 3: Always accept responsibility. This is a trait of great leaders. No matter what happens - good or bad - ultimately, it is their responsibility, as referenced in the great quote, "The buck stops here," by former U.S. President Harry Truman. By adopting this belief, one can put oneself at cause and take different actions, to produce the desired results. Alternatively, one can reject this belief, put oneself at effect, blame the world for every bad thing that happens in one's life, and suffer the consequences. How does that sound?
NLP Practitioner Belief 4: Great knowledge and total understanding about everything is not necessary for application. Successful people believe that in order to get the job done, they need to learn just the fundamentals, without getting bogged down in the unnecessary details. Besides, if need be, they have at their disposal specialists who can work out all the minor details. Furthermore, successful people are not the ones with the most knowledge, but they are the ones who masterfully use what they know to get the job done.
NLP Practitioner Belief 5: People are your greatest resources. Individuals and organizations of excellence realize that it is people who are their greatest asset, and not the product or the service. This distinction enables them to thrive in an intense competitive environment and reach the pinnacle of success in their respective fields. However, it is easy to pay glib service to this belief, but treating people with respect and dignity is no easy feat. Consider how big business works. Most large corporations go to countries that have the lowest standard of living and the least amount of human rights protection for its citizens to produce their products and services at the lowest cost. The products we use every day are produced by children, chained to a machine and fed just enough to keep them alive another day. Many corporations of excellence have no morals, just a bottom line. They are not living organisms and don't breath the air, eat the food or drink the water they pollute. Therefore, remember to not only treat your people with respect and dignity, but also to compensate them well, and you will reap dividends.
NLP Practitioner Belief 6: It's not work; it's just play. For successful people who entertain this belief, their work is their playground. It drives them, excites them, and enriches their lives. Fundamentally, they have a distinct passion and total love for what they do. Their work is synonymous with play - and to paraphrase Mark Twain, "Successful people's secret is that they have transformed their vocation into their vacation." This is called sublimation (converting your sex drive into your work drive).
NLP Practitioner Belief 7: Success requires commitment. Needless to say, successful people embrace this belief with open arms as it propels them to their desired results. No man can achieve lasting success without the power of commitment! I have a perfect example of the power of commitment. During a marathon, my legs collapsed half-way. However, I was committed to finishing the full race and settling for nothing less. Therefore, I modified my strategy: I continued to walk slowly for a few miles - until I regained my strength - then resumed jogging and darted to the finishing line with a gigantic smile on my face!
